When Graham Gouldman formed what became Heart Full of Songs nine years ago, it was purely for the pleasure of playing his songs in their simplest form, acoustically. The semi-acoustic four-piece performs a broad spread of Graham’s song-writing catalogue, including chart hits for 10cc, the Hollies, Herman’s Hermits, the Yardbirds, Jeff Beck and his time in Wax with Andrew Gold. The band line-up comprises Graham, 10cc live band members Iain Hornal and Keith Hayman, and Dave Cobby.
For lovers of perfectly crafted music performed by the composer, a Heart Full of Songs concert is truly an exquisite experience. But it is only between 10cc’s sell-out, bi-annual UK tours that the band’s co-founder Graham Gouldman can fully indulge his Heart Full of Songs project and take it on tour. Now is one of those times and this March, Graham is heading out on tour once more. I chatted to him, earlier this year.
When it comes to writing his music, unless he is collaborating with someone Graham would much rather take a walk in the countryside than sit in his music room waiting. He is also someone who loves to meditate. Meanwhile, the latest project to earn Graham a wealth of media coverage is his new song Floating In Heaven, which caught the attention of Queen’s Brian May, at a crucial time in the history of space exploration. It is also something Graham had spent a lot of time watching online.
Brian, who has a passion for astronomy and a PhD in astrophysics, worked with Graham to release Floating In Heaven as a single to mark the unveiling to the world of the first astonishing images from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope on 12 July. The pair performed the song with a full orchestra at the sixth Starmus convention, held on 5-10 September in Yerevan, Armenia. Floating In Heaven is also the soundtrack for a YouTube video featuring the images, released by the Space Telescope Science Institute in the US.
I wondered with all the travelling and touring he had done with 10cc and Brian May with that project, whether there was a part of the world he had not been to that he would really love to? “ I have been to South America, the rhythms of the music are so different to what we are used to. Like the Bosa Nova in Cuba".
I wondered what audiences could look forward to with these gigs. Graham said “There will of course be numbers from the “Heart Full of Songs” album. But what is most important is that there is a clear beginning, end and middle to the set list and within that a rich variety of numbers” Looking at the list of bands that Graham has written for over the years, that would not be a challenge. The “Heart Full of Songs” tour starts this evening in Bury St Edmunds and runs until nearly the end of March at the Lowry in Salford.
