Gandini Juggling’s homage to dance theatre superstar Pina Bausch

Other-worldly juggling, a heavenly soundtrack and the heady scent of apples in "Smashed". Juggling supremos Gandini Juggling bring the spirit of Pina Bausch and the heady scent of apples to the Peacock Theatre on 31 May and 1 June with their signature work Smashed – the first time the show will have been seen in London for seven years.

Funny, inventive and characterful, the 60-minute piece features nine jugglers, 100 red apples and a soundtrack of songs including Tammy Wynette, music hall and Bach. Nostalgic filmic scenes explore lost love, tense relationships - and afternoon tea. Performed with meticulous unison and split-second timing, Smashed challenges perceptions of contemporary juggling.

Conceived in 2010, Smashed embodies Gandini Juggling’s ongoing love affair with contemporary dance. Directors Sean Gandini and Kati Ylä-Hokkala took elements of Pina Bausch’s gestural theatrical choreography and combined them with the intricate patterns and cascades of solo and ensemble juggling to create a new hybrid of juggling and dance theatre.

It was whilst working as a street entertainer, two things happened firstly his performing magic was overshadowed by a desire not to be outshone at juggling. Then a 20 year-old former gymnast impressed him with her club work, as he told me "I could always juggle three or four balls, it came quite naturally. Then I went to Covent Garden to do magic shows and saw someone do five balls - and I had an urgent sense of having to learn this! It was the beginning of my juggling addiction."

"Kati had just retired from competitive Rhythmic Gymnastics (at age 20!) and came to Covent Garden to watch some of the outdoor shows. She had never seen juggling but the clubs were similar to the ones she used. She asked if she could play with my clubs... I was so impressed that we started playing together every Sunday! ".

I wondered how the idea of choreographing the juggling came about, and discovered that as juggling had given Sean his partner, Kati he had decided to repay the favour. "We are surrounded by a very creative team so it is a team effort. But we work a lot with mathematics and geometry before getting into the studio to work things out. It seemed kind of inevitable to us. Initially it was mainly dance but very quickly we realised that juggling had been in the lonely corner for quite some time. So we have been sending it on Tinder dates with other art forms..."

"We are currently finishing Heka, a piece which combines magic and juggling. Further down the road, we are preparing a piece which deeps deep into mathematics and even further down, we have another very exciting project to come. Watch this space!" Speaking of watching, what can audiences look forward to with "Smashed"? "It is a journey. The piece has elements of cabaret and vaudeville but can take people on more complex journeys. It is also silly and funny. And sometimes provocative..."

Smashed is performed by Tedros Girmaye, Sean Gandini, Kim Huynh, Antoni Klemm, Sakari Männistö, Iñaki Sestre, Malte Steinmetz, Jose Triguro and Kati Ylä-Hokkala. It can be seen at Sadler's Wells Peacock Theatre, London on 31 May & 1 June at 7.30pm for tickets and further information please contact the ticket office on  020 7863 8222 or www.sadlerswells.com

Ahead of his return to the UK/Ireland this week, Corb Lund has shared an acoustic video of 'Old Familiar Drunken Feeling' - see below. The track closes Lund's latest album El Viejo released in February, via New West Records, and which was deemed the 'Americana Album of the Month' by Uncut magazine. Commenting on the 'Old Familiar Drunken Feeling', Lund shared, " It's about taking a gummy bear, a THC gummy bear, when it first got legalized in Colorado, having to play a show that night. It was terrifying. If you're not a pot guy, it can be pretty disconcerting and your brain starts getting away on you and you have a bunch of weird paranoid thoughts ." El Viejo pays tribute to Lund’s late friend and mentor, the famed Canadian singer-songwriter Ian Tyson, who passed away 29 December, 2022. El Viejo was produced by Lund and recorded entirely in his living room in Lethbridge, AB with his band The Hurtin’ Albertans. El Viejo is Lund’s first album of original material since 2020’s critically acclaimed Agricultural Tragic , which was named an album of the year by the readers of No Depression. Gathering around his living room, Lund & Co. tapped into his most cherished musical influences of acoustic tone and lyrical aptitude — Marty Robbins, Kris Kristofferson, Bobbie Gentry, Jerry Reed. There is a common theme — possibly even a character thread — of the gambler, the outlaw who roams from place-to-place with no direction home. With the album, he has also created an ode to the notion of stripping everything down and letting the tape roll — simply capturing a moment of pure vulnerability and organic inspiration in real time. Much like his music, Lund is decidedly hard to define. The western Canadian singer-songwriter is an elusive artist — onstage, offstage, and in the studio — seamlessly weaving between the outlaw country, Western, and indie-folk realms with an honest curiosity and rowdy devotion to each. He was raised with the tried and true DIY sentiment of “if you want something done, you gotta do it yourself” launching his career recording in his basement, printing his own shirts, booking his own tours, being his own manager and publicist… whatever it took to get it done. Corb Lund has been touring Europe and is set to close out his run with headline shows with a sold-out show in London. Before moving onto to Manchester, Birkenhead, Dublin and Kilkenny. ‘Collaborators’ is a darkly comic satire of Stalinist Russia, with a descent from hilarity to tragedy that has rarely been portrayed quite so well on the stage – winning John Hodge the 2012 Olivier Award for Best Play. Now, The Rondo Theatre Company are thrilled to be working with BAFTA and Olivier award winning writer, John Hodge, to bring ‘Collaborators’ to the Rondo Theatre in Bath this coming week. Although the play is a work of fiction, it is inspired by true events from the life of Mikhail Bulgakov, who is best known for his novel ‘The Master and Margarita.’ It follows Bulgakov’s surreal journey as he is given the offer of a lifetime: write a play about Stalin’s early life, or else. Not something one easily turns down in 1930s Moscow! " For me ," says John Hodge, " Stalin and Bulgakov are a classic double act, the schemer and the innocent, the spider and the fly, playing out their comedy against a backdrop of one of the twentieth century’s defining horrors." Best known as the screenwriter for The Beach, Shallow Grave, and Trainspotting, John Hodge is involved in the Rondo Theatre Company’s production of ‘Collaborators’. " I was thrilled to learn that ‘Collaborators’ is to be staged at the lovely Rondo Theatre, " says John Hodge, " I have met the wonderful cast and I am really looking forward to this production in my adopted home town ." Speaking about the production, director Matt Nation said, " It’s been an incredible experience directing Collaborators alongside the award winning author - John Hodge has enthralled us all with his insights into the gestation of the play and it’s array of characters. Collaborators is a rare treat theatrically - simultaneously hilarious, poignant, tragic and thought provoking." " As a Bath resident himself, John has been wonderfully supportive of the show and we have been blessed with an excellent cast (- it's very much a Collaborative experience!) Indeed, we are all looking forward to unveiling what is undoubtedly a very special performance for the Rondo Theatre Company! " ‘Collaborators’ features a cast of 14 local actors from the Rondo Theatre Company, which has been the performing arm of the Rondo Theatre since 1982. The play will be performed at the Rondo Theatre, St. Saviours Road, Bath BA1 6RT, from Wednesday 19th to Saturday 22nd June 2024, 7.30pm. Playwright, John Hodge will be attending the performances on the Friday and Saturday nights to take part in a Q&A session after the shows. More information and tickets are available on the Rondo website . Bottom picture: The Rondo Cast with John Hodge
