"Fanny" - A World Premiere at The Watermill

...who?

You’ll probably know her younger brother, Felix Mendelssohn, from 19th century smash hits like The Wedding March. He was the Cliff Richard of his day and was even asked to play at a personal concert for Queen Victoria. But only if he played her favourite piece of music ever, a song called Italien. However, we now know that Felix was forced to admit to the Queen that, in actuality, the piece had been composed by his sister, Fanny, and simply published under his name.

The world premiere production of FANNY, a new comedy by Calum Finlay that will play at The Watermill from Thursday 23 May to Saturday 15 June. Produced by RJG Productions and The Watermill Theatre and directed by Katie-Ann McDonough, this fun and irreverent new comedy celebrates classical music and - at last - recognises the work of a composer overlooked for her sex.

Director Katie-Ann McDonough said, "FANNY is a story that needs to be told and I’m excited to bring it to life with this incredible cast and creative team. Fanny Mendelssohn’s story has been waiting in the background for far too long and I can’t wait for audiences to experience it with us."

FANNY imagines that Fanny intercepts a letter addressed to ‘F. Mendelssohn’ inviting Felix to play for Queen Victoria. As the true composer of Italien, she decides to hide the letter, don her brother’s clothes, and take his place at the palace…cueing a race across Europe and a furious Felix.!

Charlie Russell (The Goes Wrong Show - BBC, The Play That Goes Wrong - West End & Broadway) stars as Fanny, Corey Montague-Sholay (Bacon – Finborough Theatre, Edinburgh Fringe, Riverside Studios, Bristol Old Vic & Soho Playhouse, New York, Wendy & Peter Pan – Leeds Playhouse) as Felix.

Harry Kershaw (The Play That Goes Wrong – West End, Peter Pan Goes Wrong – West End & Broadway) as Paul, Kim Ismay (Elf The Musical – West End, Wicked – West End, UK & International Tour) as Lea, George Howard (Sherwood – BBC, Witness for the Prosecution – London County Hall) as Willhelm and Jade May Lin (professional debut) as Clara.

Joining McDonough on the creative team are Yshani Perinanayagam (Emilia – West End, Wolf Witch Giant Fairy – Linbury Theatre, Royal Opera House) as Composer & Musical Director, HJB Casting as Casting Director, Sophia Pardon (The Wizard of Oz – Watermill Theatre, How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying – Southwark Playhouse) as Set & Costume Designer.

David Howe (The Mind Mangler – West End, Off-Broadway & UK Tour, A Comedy About A Bank Robbery – West End & UK Tour) as Lighting Designer, Thomas André Wasley (Touching The Void – Hong Kong Arts Festival & West End, Wolf Witch Giant Fairy – Linbury Theatre, Royal Opera House) as Sound Designer, Hannah Gilbert as Costume Supervisor, Olivia Wolfenden as Company Stage Manager on Book and Sophy Johnston as Assistant Stage Manager.

Producer Rebecca Gwyther said, “We could not have hoped for a more symphonic team to bring FANNY to life at the Watermill Theatre. After years of development, we’re ready for audiences to experience Fanny’s story in this imaginative comedy that’s certain to strike a chord." Joint CEOs of The Watermill, Artistic Director Paul Hart, Executive Director Claire Murray, said, “We’re delighted to be collaborating with Rebecca and the team to stage the world premiere of FANNY at the Watermill Theatre."

"We think audiences will love this hilarious new play inspired by the remarkable truth of who actually composed Felix Mendelssohn’s greatest hits!”  For your chance to join the audience for Fanny, tickets and further information can be found at their website or calling the Box Office on 01635 46044.

“ ...Robin demonstrates his vulnerability through poignant and introspective lyricism " - Wonderland Acclaimed Swedish pop artist Boy In Space (Robin Lundbäck) releases his highly anticipated new EP 'Copium' along with a cinematic new video for single Mayflowers. This year has seen Boy In Space be more vulnerable than ever, as he has opened up about both physical- and mental health struggles through his music. Having already released tracks Atom Bomb, Finally Fine Without You and The Last Time. this newest offering will act as the fourth and final single, coinciding with the release of his EP ‘Copium’. The accompanying new video sees Robin take on a fresh role as both an actor and co-director, beautifully blending his passion for filmmaking with his staple raw vocalism and earnest lyrics. As the new EP reflects themes of vulnerability and self-improvement, Mayflowers is a nostalgic anthem about being able to appreciate the past. Boy In Space: ” With the music video for 'Mayflowers,' ROOM7 and I were heavily inspired by the movies 'Taxi Driver' and 'The Tree of Life.' " We wanted to contrast those settings. One being very dark and gloomy, and the other being beautiful and light, like the memories of what used to be. It was a great learning curve being a co-director on this project and also being a silent actor. We filmed the video in my hometown of Alingsås, which made the process a lot easier, knowing the best locations for certain scenes. ” ” Coming from a time in my life with a lot of challenges and changes, working with 'Copium' really has been an important coping mechanism for me these last months and has given me a chance to get a lot of things off my chest, It's a collection of songs I honestly can say I'm really proud of. " The EP arrives after a tumultuous few years for Robin. In addition to undergoing three surgeries and facing physical health struggles, he has had to wrestle with the mental challenges that come with living with ADHD. The final two songs, Mayflower and Somewhere Far Away, certainly reflect themes of mental health and self-improvement, but this project has also allowed Robin to explore his creative interests on a lighter note. " It’s been so much fun to dive into my interest in old school films in making the visuals for this EP. The people I’ve worked with are crazy talented, both on the music and visual side of things. It really does feel like a perfect relaunch for me to get an outlet for my creativity and a springboard for where I want to go next. I would love it if ‘Copium’ could help others to cope with whatever they are going through like it has helped me .” Boy In Space achieved international success at a remarkably young age. After embarking on a world tour with his brothers, he transitioned to launch his solo career in 2018, solidifying his position on the global music scene. His distinctive voice, whimsical writing style, and versatile productions quickly captivated the pop world, leading to an impressive tally of over half a billion streams on Spotify alone. All the while maintaining independence as an artist and touring extensively in the United States and Europe. He keeps on shining armed with a new team, a fresh visual identity and a wealth of new music. Collaborations include Alan Walker, The Struts, 1Mind, Toby Gadd, Pink Sweat$, Phoebe Ryan, Jordan Shaw, NOTD, Shy Martin, John Newman, Red Triangle, Nick Furlong, Rod Wave, Freddy Alexander, among others. With this brand new attitude and determination to put an imprint on today's pop sound, the future looks bright for Boy In Space. to keep an eye on where his new orbit should take him: FIND BOY IN SPACE ONLINE: YOUTUBE / SPOTIFY / INSTAGRAM / TIKTOK
