Ewan MacFarlane releases “This Year” as a Christmas single

Peter Anderson • Dec 03, 2021

Ewan MacFarlane releases a beautifully poignant Christmas single ‘This Year’ today, the track comes from the deluxe release of his acclaimed debut solo album ‘Always Everlong’, due out 18th February 2022! ‘This Year’ is an unashamed Christmas song that both tugs at the heartstrings, whilst simultaneously bringing a sense of hope. He explains “it sums up the year that faced us when covid struck and life changed in the blink of an eye. It’s about paying tribute to the unfortunate souls that have passed on, but also about coming together and helping each other out in ways both big and small. Tough as it’s been, it looks forward to a brighter future.”

Part of that brighter future Ewan is looking forward to is a solo career. the former Grim Northern Social and Apollo 440 frontman set out his stall as a solo artist with a collection of finely crafted rock ‘n’ roll songs - the release of his debut solo album ‘Always Everlong’ in October, too much acclaim. That captured the unnameable feeling all great musicians elicit when you find yourself in the presence of something truly special.

The album came about when MacFarlane challenged himself mid lockdown to write a tune a day to upload to YouTube each evening, these songs tell tales of tension with pledges of eternal love. An expression of his hopes and fears, ‘Always Everlong’ is emboldened by a personable approach to classic rock penmanship as Ewan bares his soul by putting pen to paper, unafraid of the consequences. Honouring the revered rock’n’roll songbooks of Bowie, Petty, and Springsteen, it plots the works of those making up the soundtrack to his own life, who have always called, enthralled, and entranced him.

Like all great albums, music lovers will be revisiting “Always Everlong” for years to come and with this in mind, MacFarlane has announced the digital release of a deluxe ‘Always Everlong’ package to come out in February 2022. Including extra rarities and treasures, the new digital release celebrates the successes of the album’s initial release and as ripples of the initial ‘Always Everlong’ release still expand out into the world, the deluxe edition gives those that may have overlooked this future classic another reason to dive right in and check it out.

On the deluxe release, Ewan said, “we had so many great songs that we left out first time around. Then when the reaction to the album was so strong, it seemed like the sensible thing to do was to release an expanded version of the album.” The new package includes 7 extra tracks in total, and among them is Christmas single “This Year” released today. Not only has he released the single, but in the New Year, ne fans & old will be able to hear him as a support act at a number of gigs. " It was as perfect a day as I could wish for. Getting to hang out with one of my favourite bands and take pictures was just sensational." Tom Murray In the Summer of 1968, Tom Murray was invited to assist renowned photojournalist Sir Don McCullin in capturing a new publicity campaign for The Beatles, who at the time were in the midst of recording The White Album. Armed with just two rolls of film and a Nikon F:35mm, Murray produced some of the most revered colour images of the band, now known as the ‘Mad Day Out’. From April 19th - May 25th, RedHouse Gallery in Harrogate will premiere a new exhibition presenting an exclusive glimpse behind the scenes with The Beatles, featuring images by acclaimed photographer Tom Murray. During a time when The Beatles kept to themselves and away from photographers as much as possible, Murray couldn't believe his luck; alongside McCullin, he had been selected as one of the few people given carte blanche to photograph the band. He recalls: "At first they were fed up of having pictures taken, so they stopped doing shoots altogether. However, when they kept seeing out-of-date photos they decided to do one final day of what they called 'mad' photography. They hired Don to capture their antics as they wanted, and I was left to my own devices to shoot whatever I liked. It's a photographer's dream to be free to shoot what they want: no brief, no instructions and no restrictions." "It really was a mad day rushing around London. We would get half-an-hour, maybe forty-five minutes at the most, in any one place before too many people arrived, which was really good. I doubt you could do it now. You'd be inundated with screaming fans and paparazzi in about 30 seconds! " The day after the shoot, The Beatles recorded the single Hey Jude. Murray processed and printed his two rolls of film, and, remarkably, stored them away for almost thirty years. These photographs were only viewed in public for the first time in 1998, and the colours, tone and definition are astonishing for their age - the original slides were kept in the dark in an envelope for many years. Murray’s complete ‘Mad Day Out’ collection of 23 photographs will be exhibited with just one example of each image available to purchase. These rare prints will be complemented by artworks from Astrid Kirchherr, Dudley Edwards and Peter Blake. The exhibition - ‘The Beatles: A Mad Day Out’ will go on display in Harrogate from Friday 19th April – Saturday 25 th May. The Beatles: Mad Day Out | RedHouse Originals

The People’s Princess is returning to the capital. Told by Diana from heaven, Diana: The Untold and Untrue Story foregrounds this iconic royal as the powerful, independent woman she wasn’t meant to be. A cult-hit with audiences for its unique audience participation and staggeringly camp portrayal of the royals, the show highlights Diana’s ground-breaking stances on social and queer issues and allows her to finally speak her (un)truth and break free from the monarchy. After a sold-out Edinburgh Fringe run, a UK tour and a big night out at The Clapham Grand in 2023, the most unhinged piece of theatre in existence (Broadway Baby) makes its triumphant return to London. Awkward Productions "Diana: The Untold and Untrue Story" uniquely combines drag, multimedia, audience interaction, puppetry and queer joy for an unforgettable, untrue experience. Awkward Productions comment, " This is our first run in London since the show opened - and the journey we've been on since has been nothing short of Diconic. We're beyond thrilled that queer icon Diana will be at London's home of queer performance, King's Head Theatre, to meet, outrage and inspire her audiences - or should I say her Di-hards? " In news that’s ‘ better than a Guinness, better than a wank! ’, star of Diana: The Musical, Jeanna de Waal (below), has been confirmed to join the upcoming run of Diana: The Untold and Untrue Story. Audiences will be seeing double as de Waal makes a video appearance She joins Diana: The Untold and Untrue Story’s writer and performer Linus Karp to form a Di-namic duo like never before! Linus commented: " Jeanna de Waal is a ridiculously talented performer, a wonderful human and the ultimate Dicon. To get to perform with her and to have her join Diana: The Untold and Untrue Story is just beyond exciting. Put on your best fuckity, fuckity fuck you dresses and come see her Di-tastic performance!" Fresh from a sold-out run of their viral hit Gwyneth Goes Skiing, Awkward Productions will continue to take London by storm with Diana: The Untold and Untrue Story playing at the new Kings Head Theatre from 17th April to 5th May 2024.
